Sedation Dentistry
Our team at McKibben Dental in Reynoldsburg is committed to helping children feel comfortable and relaxed in the dentist’s chair. We are proud to offer options to help relieve any dental anxiety or discomfort when possible, such as sedation options.
When it comes to our sedation dentistry options, there are a few different levels and types available. Dr. McKibben and Dr. Ehrbar will discuss your child’s options with you at their next appointment to figure out the best choice.
What Are The Types of Sedation?
Providing your child with a calm, relaxing dental environment is our number one goal. There are three main types of sedation used for sedation dentistry, depending on the scale of a child’s needs.
Nitrous oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas,” is one of the most common types of sedation. It is a mild gas that children inhale through a comfortable nose mask. This gas puts children at ease by providing a relaxing, calming effect during treatment.
One of the main benefits of nitrous oxide is that it wears off very quickly, allowing your child to return to everyday activities without any grogginess.
If a child is in need of a more powerful sedation method, a dentist may offer intravenous (IV) sedation. This method helps those who experience a high level of dental anxiety–as always, a member of our team will closely monitor your child throughout the procedure to ensure they are healthy and safe!
Sometimes, a child may deal with a very strong dental phobia and require a deep level of sedation to get through the procedure–this is when general anesthesia may be used. Children are completely unconscious during this type of sedation and it requires the use of an anesthesiologist in a surgical setting.
Is Sedation Dentistry Safe for My Child?
At McKibben Dental, your child’s safety is always our top priority. Sedation and other forms of anesthesia are considered safe for use and have been used for several years in the dental field.
Both you and your child can feel confident knowing that our team is highly trained and experienced in administering certain levels of sedation with your safety and comfort in mind. For your safety and health, we ask that you disclose any current medications or medical issues your child may have prior to the use of sedation dentistry.
